Buyer's Guide to Kia Brakes

What Are the Types of Kia Brake Systems?

Chances are, your Kia car or SUV has a disc brake system, though some still use drum brakes. Both systems rely on master brake cylinders, brake pistons, brake hoses, and brake lines. When you press your foot against the brake pedal, the master brake cylinder responds by sending brake fluid through the lines and hoses. What happens next is where the two systems differ.

What is The Difference Between Disc and Drum Brake Systems?

In a drum brake system, the fluid pressure causes a brake shoe to fasten to the nominal brake drum. That produces the friction -- or resistance -- needed to slow the rotation of your wheels.

With a disc brake system, that pressure forces the brake calipers to close brake pads onto the brake rotors to generate that same resistance.

How Do You Spot Faulty Brakes?

Even the highest quality brake parts will eventually begin to go bad due to wear-and-tear caused by the very act of braking. Signs of failure include:

  • Your dash warning light comes on
  • You hear grinding, squealing, or squeaking noises when you brake
  • You need more time and distance to stop
  • Your Kia vehicle shudders when you're braking
  • The brake pedal feels soft or squishy
  • Your car or SUV pulls to one side when you're braking
