How A Kia Air Intake System Works

How air intake works is simple. Your Kia vehicle has an intake manifold that draws outside air in through the engine air filter. That filter captures harmful contaminants and debris, allowing fresh, cool air to flow into the engine.

From there, three parts team up to regulate the amount of air delivered to the engine at a given moment. The mass airflow sensor measures air movement, while the air metering system sends data concerning the amount of air being used to the engine control unit (ECU). Finally, the oxygen sensor measures exhaust levels, allowing the engine to adjust both fuel and air levels to optimize the mix feeding combustion.

How to Recognize Air Intake Issues

Even the highest quality air intake parts can wind up going bad over time. Signs of trouble include:

  • Your engine idles faster or slower than usual
  • Worsening engine performance
  • Your engine revs at a higher rate than normal
  • The "Check Engine" dash light comes on
  • That last sign is a generic alert, however, and can result from any number of issues. That means you'll need to connect a code reader to determine the real cause for concern.
