How Kia AC Systems Work

Wherever your Kia car, crossover, or SUV takes you, your HVAC system is responsible for maintaining a comfortable cabin temperature and circulating fresh air into the passenger space. How it works depends on the function.

Heating is simplest to explain. The HVAC system draws hot coolant from the engine to a small heater core. A fan blows over the core's fins, causing the warm air to flow through the air vents and into your cabin.

Cooling is a bit more involved. First, the compressor pressurizes refrigerant, converting it into a hot gas. A condenser cools that gas until it reverts into a liquid state. The liquid passes through an expansion valve, which transforms it into a low pressure gas. Lastly, an evaporator uses a fan to cool the gas quickly. That then gets blown through the air vents into the passenger space.

How to Spot AC System Issues

Unfortunately, your AC system can start to go bad. Signs of trouble include:

  • Inconsistent cabin temperatures
  • You notice the sweet smell of coolant in the air
  • Your cabin air feels steamy
